HAWKES HAPPENINGS

The Newsletter of the Hawkes Bluff Homeowners' Association

The next quarterly meeting will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesday January 23rd at the Ivanhoe FireStation community room please plan to attend

NEWS FROM YOUR BOARD

The board would like to wish all our Hawkes Bluff residents a healthy and prosperous New Year and hope that everyone had a happy and enjoyable holiday season.

Recently your board has concentrated on determining the budget for the new association year. Standard items (lawn maintenance, utilities, administrative expenses) and an assortment of variable items are budgeted for every association year, which runs January to December. Association fees fall due at the end of February and are set once the budget is complete. We have increased the fees slightly this year due mainly to the need felt for additional security (see also "Vandalism" item, page 2). Assessment notices, an agenda for the January quarterly meeting and a copy of the budget were mailed to all residents with this newsletter. The budget will be discussed at the next meeting on Tuesday January 23rd.

In determining the budget various improvements are often planned for the coming year. In the past year accomplishments include adding a wall and sign at the Griffin Road entrance to the development; additional landscaping in two areas: between the lakes on Hawkes Bluff Avenue just south of the town-homes and along the canal on Huntridge Road and adding improved lighting to the existing landscaping at all 3 entrances.

This year we again had pretty holiday lights brightening the Stirling Road entrance. Many thanks to Recording Secretary Gretchen Farmer and her husband Doug for erecting the lights and to Vice President Mo Christie for removing them. Many homes in the development were beautifully decorated over the holiday season and prizes will be awarded at the January meeting for the winners of the annual holiday decorating contest.

Our new improved web site created and maintained by Corresponding Secretary Jay Stahl continues to provide plenty of up-to-date information for our residents. If you have access to the Internet please make a point of making regular visits to www.hawkesbluff.com where a number of useful links can be found. Check this site for updates about local development around us and also about the "nearest" high school (see page 3 article)

Once again this year the efforts of our compliance officer Director John Pickett have produced excellent results. Residents are encouraged to start the new year with an outside inspection of their roofs and other items that may need attention. Unfortunately the removal of the melalucca trees along 1-75 only seems to have helped roofs of homes near the highway get dirtier.

Residents are reminded that the association board holds regular monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Quarterly meetings are held in January, April and July. The annual meeting and election is held in October with a Nomination meeting in September. Please make a note now of these meeting dates in 2001

Congratulations go to all our winners and to the many homeowners who made the development look so pretty. The board had an extremely hard time judging this year and would also like to give special mention to features at the following homes:

15640 Huntridge Road - elaborate lights in the palms

5821 Surrey Circle E - delightful variety of decorations

5710 Briarwood Way- beautiful angels in the trees

There were some lovely candlelit luminaires this year. Briarwood Manor and Briarwood Way started this tradition 12 years ago and it has spread within this development. Despite a rainy day the Briarwoods and some other streets looked very pretty on Christmas Eve. Many people on the Briarwoods braved the cold to sit outside and enjoy this charming scene - especially by an outdoor fireplace where we roasted marshmallows...

Towards the north end of Hawkes Bluff Avenue a luminaire took place on New Year' s Eve - what a pretty sight for those daring to venture out that night.

NEW YEAR AND OTHER CELEBRATIONS

With temperatures plunging over the New Year holiday many of the planned street parties in the neighborhood moved indoors but we have few details or pictures. Please share your plans for upcoming occasions: Valentine's Day, St Patrick's Day, etc. We'd love to publish news of neighborhood parties.

COMMUNITY-WIDE YARD SALE

Many people like to start the year with a big clean up and sort out of their "stuff". Therefore the next community wide yard-sale is the weekend of

March 17th and 18th

This precedes bulk pick-up on Monday March 19~. Advertisements will be placed in the Flyer and other local papers by the association. Notices announcing the yard-sale will be placed at the entrances in the week prior. It costs nothing to take part - put everything out and start selling. If it doesn't sell and you want to get rid of it, just put it out for bulk pick up day.

VANDALISM

Over the holiday season a number of residents had holiday decorations torn down and ruined by acts of petty vandalism. In most cases residents did not file police reports. Please, please do so... how can we ask the Davie police for extra patrols when there are no reports on file of any problems in the development?

Graffiti on the sign at the north end was promptly cleaned up thanks to the efforts of the Farmer family particularly Doug and Paul. A police report was filed regarding this vandalism and also some lighting torn out at the south entrance. Any persons caught vandalizing property maintained by this association WILL BE PROSECUTED. All our residents are encouraged to report any acts of vandalism on their property to the Davie police. Remember the costs of repairing damage caused by vandalism in the common areas maintained by the association does come out of your association fees. Additional funds have been budgeted this year to allow for random security patrols in the neighborhood.

ANNUAL PICNIC

SUNDAY APRIL 22ND

Recent drops in temperature do not encourage outdoor pursuits. Hopefully spring temperatures will be more normal and we can hold another annual picnic at Tree Tops Park in the nice weather we are usually lucky enough to have. Plan ahead and mark the date on your calendars now and watch the newsletter for more details. Please contact Mo Christie to volunteer to help with planning, preparation or on the day - thanks.

WHERE WILL YOUR CHILD GO TO HIGH SCHOOL?

9 MILES AWAY? OR ONLY 2.5 MILES?

As many residents are already aware there are new boundary proposals that will affect high school age children from Hawkes Bluff who attend public school. There are two proposals for the new HHH high school near the Falcons Cove campus. One proposal EXCLUDES Hawkes Bluff and residents to the east but INCLUDES all of the City of Weston. The other proposal includes Hawkes Bluff children. If we are excluded then WESTERN HIGH is the assigned High School for this area. Parents of children not yet in high school need to pay close attention to what is being decided and to voice any concerns. For the latest news on this please check your association web-site and the local newspapers.

ARE YOU MOVING?

Are you planning to leave the neighborhood? We're sorry to lose you but please bear in mind the following when you do get ready to move. You may need an estoppel letter - to show that fees are paid and you don't owe the association anything. Do make sure to request this in plenty of time as failure to plan will not get you the letter any faster. Don't delay your closing by not planning ahead. Requests should be made by mail, fax or e-mail (NOT by phoning board members).

Please do not pile trash up - there is and always has been a 5 item limit. There are also size and weight limits. Plan ahead and get rid of big items early, ideally on a bulk pick-up day. Better still rent a skip or dumpster to dump all your stuff as some recent residents did. Do make sure that any items you do put out will not be blown away in high winds. Please be considerate to the neighbors you are leaving behind.

IS YOUR FLOOR OK?

A resident on Briarwood Manor has recently experienced a problem with floor tiles lifting. After 12 years in the house it seems unlikely to be a "settling" problem. Are other neighbors experiencing any such problems? If so, please let the board know.., thanks
